Quick Answer

An Indian licence holder can drive in Tunisia with an International Driving Permit recommended alongside it. The main adjustment is the side — Tunisia drives on the right, India on the left — and the drink-drive limit is 0.03, the same as India, so no extra margin. The desert south is where planning matters most.

Tunisia packs a lot into a small country — Mediterranean coast, Roman ruins and the edge of the Sahara — and a car is the only practical way to link them. For an Indian visitor the paperwork is light; the habits and the geography are what to plan around.

Can an Indian licence holder drive in Tunisia?

Yes. Your Indian licence is accepted for visitors, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to carry alongside it. Tunisia operates in Arabic and French, so an officer at one of the routine police checkpoints may not read an Indian licence directly — the IDP provides a recognised translation that keeps stops short. Keep the IDP, your Indian licence and passport together, and arrange the permit at home before you fly.

The side switch is the main adjustment

India drives on the left; Tunisia drives on the right. That reversal is the thing most likely to catch you out, and the risk concentrates in your first hours — pulling out of junctions, taking roundabouts the new way, or a reflex glance in the wrong direction. Tunis traffic is busy and assertive, with scooters and pedestrians weaving close, so take your opening drive somewhere calm and stay deliberate at every turn until the new side feels natural.

Alcohol and the desert factor

The drink-drive limit is 0.03 — the same as India, so the figure itself is familiar, but it still leaves no margin; treat any alcohol before driving as a no. The bigger planning issue is the south. Limits run 50 km/h in towns, 90 on rural roads and 110 on the motorway, and the northern roads are reasonable, but head toward the Sahara and surfaces, fuel and signal all thin out. Never set off into the desert without a full tank, water and a clear route — petrol is cheap at around $0.72 a litre, so there is no reason to run low. The emergency number is 112.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, with an International Driving Permit recommended to carry beside it. Arabic and French are the working languages, so the IDP gives police at checkpoints a readable translation of your Indian licence.

Check if your licence is valid

Tunisia drives on the right, the opposite of India. The side switch is the biggest single adjustment, and the first day on the road is when it catches you out.

Tunisia's blood-alcohol limit is 0.03 — the same as India, so the number is familiar. It still leaves no real margin, so treat any drink before driving as a no.
