Trinidad and Tobago on an Indian Licence — No Side Switch, IDP Advised

For an Indian driver, Trinidad and Tobago is one of the easier Caribbean islands to take on — the licence is straightforward and, unlike most of the region, you keep to the side of the road you already know.

Your licence and the side that stays the same

You can drive in Trinidad and Tobago on your Indian licence as a visitor. Pair it with an International Driving Permit, the recognised translation that car-hire desks and police prefer to see alongside your Indian licence and passport, and arrange the IDP in India before you leave.

The headline for Indian visitors: Trinidad and Tobago drives on the left, exactly as India does. No mirrored junctions, no re-learning which way a roundabout turns, no instinctive glance in the wrong direction. That removes the single most common hazard tourists face abroad and lets you focus on local traffic instead.

Dense roads, cheap fuel, modest speeds

Speeds are low by design — about 40 km/h in towns, 60 km/h on rural roads and 80 km/h on the highways — and around Port of Spain the real obstacle is congestion rather than pace. Rush-hour traffic is heavy and lane discipline loose, so leave plenty of room. The drink-drive limit is 0.08 BAC, more relaxed than India’s strict 0.03, but with crowded roads the sensible line is zero alcohol before driving.

One genuine perk: fuel is heavily subsidised at roughly $0.42 a litre, among the cheapest you will pay anywhere, so the cost of getting around is the least of your worries. Keep your documents on you, and download offline maps before exploring Tobago’s quieter north.
