Can an American Drive in Timor-Leste? — Yes, but You Switch to the Left
United States
Timor-Leste
Yes — an American can drive in Timor-Leste on a US licence, with an International Driving Permit recommended. The single biggest adjustment is the side switch: Timor-Leste drives on the left, so you'll be steering and judging junctions from the opposite side to home. The alcohol limit is also a stricter 0.05.
Half of Timor-Leste’s appeal — the south coast, the mountain road up to Maubisse, the dive sites past Dili — is only reachable by car, and a rental is the realistic way to see it. For an American the paperwork is simple; the genuine adjustment is which side of the road you’re on, because Timor-Leste is a left-hand-drive country and the United States is not.
Can an American drive on a US licence here?
Yes. A US licence is accepted for a tourist stay, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to carry with it. The IDP smooths things at rental desks and at any roadside check, so keep it together with your licence and passport. Arrange the IDP at home before departure — it isn’t something you can pick up in Dili.
The real change: driving on the left
The United States drives on the right; Timor-Leste drives on the left. This is the one thing most likely to catch you out, and the danger window is your first day — pulling out of a forecourt, taking a roundabout that now flows the other way, or glancing the wrong direction at a junction. Spend your first hour on quiet roads rather than central Dili traffic, and be deliberate at every turn until “stay left” stops being a conscious thought.
A stricter alcohol limit, and roads that demand attention
The drink-drive limit is 0.05 BAC, below the 0.08 of most US states, so don’t carry over the “one beer is fine” assumption from home. Beyond the limit, the practical hazard is the roads themselves: town limit is 50 km/h, rural 70, and the few faster stretches 80 km/h, but surfaces deteriorate quickly outside Dili, lighting is sparse, and mountain sections are narrow. Drive to the road, not the sign.
Before you set off
The emergency number is 112. Download offline maps before you leave the capital — signal is unreliable in the interior. Read the full local rules on our Timor-Leste driving guide, and confirm your documents with the Driving Permit Checker.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, a US licence is accepted for tourist visits and an IDP is recommended. Carry the IDP, your licence and passport together, as documentation is checked at rental desks and roadside.
Timor-Leste drives on the left, the opposite of the US. This is the main thing to prepare for — your first hours behind the wheel will feel reversed at junctions and roundabouts.
The limit is 0.05 BAC, stricter than the 0.08 of most US states. With variable rural roads and limited lighting, treating it as zero before driving is the safe approach.
