Thailand is an easy country to fall in love with from the driver’s seat, provided you handle the documents before you fly and respect that the traffic plays by different rules to Poland’s. The licence itself is rarely the problem.
The verdict for Polish licence holders
A Polish licence works in Thailand, but only with an International Driving Permit, which is required — not the “recommended” status common across the EU. Thai police and rental desks check for the IDP alongside your Polish card and passport, so arrange it through PZM or another Polish issuer before departure. None is available once you land. Keep the IDP, licence and passport together every time you drive.
The first thing to relearn: driving on the left
Poland drives on the right; Thailand drives on the left, and that flip is what catches most Polish visitors. Collect the car away from busy centres, spend the first hour on quiet roads, and be deliberate at every turn until the new orientation sticks.
A looser alcohol rule — but a busier road
The drink-drive limit is actually higher here: Thailand permits 0.05 BAC versus Poland’s strict 0.02. That is no reason to relax. Roadside checkpoints are common and penalties harsh, and the bigger hazard is the traffic itself — cars share the road with dense streams of motorcycles, and Bangkok is relentless. The legal maximums (80 km/h urban, 90 km/h rural, 120 km/h motorway) are a ceiling, not a target, and many town streets are signed lower. Leave space, signal early, and treat the alcohol limit as zero regardless.
