Indians Driving in Thailand 2026: IDP From India, Keep Left
India
Thailand
Yes, Indians can drive in Thailand on an Indian licence carried with an International Driving Permit, which must be issued by your RTO in India before you fly. Both countries keep left.
Yes: an Indian licence alone is not enough in Thailand. Carry an International Driving Permit alongside it, issued by your RTO before you leave, because no Thai office can issue one for an Indian licence. The side of the road is the easy part, since both countries keep left. The alcohol limit is 0.05%, a little above India’s 0.03%.
Your case: Landed without the permit and hoping to fix it in Bangkok? You cannot: it has to come from India. The checkpoint and penalty detail sits on our Thailand driving guide.
The rare comfort: Thailand keeps left
India and Thailand both drive on the left. That removes more than it sounds: no wrong-side glance at junctions, no roundabouts circulating the “wrong” way, no instinct to fight when you overtake. From the moment you collect the car, the geometry of the road feels familiar.
The IDP is not optional
India issues the permit in the 1949 Geneva Convention format, and Thailand has been a party to that convention since 1962, so the Indian IDP is the document that makes your licence usable at Thai checkpoints. Carry the two together with your passport. Driving without a valid licence can also leave you uninsured: UK travel advice warns that it may invalidate travel insurance. Our driving permit checker confirms what your trip needs.
The traffic is the real test
What will stretch you is the density. Roads in Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai are crowded, and the constant is motorcycles, filtering on both sides and appearing in mirrors from nowhere. UK travel advice notes that Thailand is one of the world’s deadliest countries for motorcycle fatalities and that scooters hired in tourist areas are often unregistered. Check blind spots obsessively, signal early and assume a bike is in the gap you are about to move into.
Numbers worth knowing
The alcohol limit is 0.05%; checks spike at night and around festivals. The police emergency number is 191 and the medical emergency number 1669, not the 112 you would dial in India, so save them before you set off. The full rules sit on the Thailand driving guide.
