Tanzania on a UK Licence in 2026: Six Months, Then an IDP
United Kingdom
Tanzania
Yes: GOV.UK says a UK licence is valid in Tanzania for up to six months, with an IDP only for longer stays. Zanzibar needs a local permit via the hire firm. Traffic keeps left.
A British driver heading to Tanzania for the Serengeti, the Kilimanjaro foothills or Zanzibar gets one genuine break the moment they pick up the keys: the side of the road is already familiar.
Can you drive in Tanzania on a UK licence?
Yes. The UK Foreign Office says you can drive in Tanzania with a UK driving licence for up to six months. Only for longer stays is an International Driving Permit required, and the Tanzanian High Commission can tell you which type. Carry several copies of your licence, permits and insurance documents. Zanzibar is the exception to the simple picture: there you also need a local Zanzibar driving permit, which the hire company can arrange.
The British advantage: Tanzania keeps left
Tanzania drives on the left, as the UK does. No relearning roundabouts and no wrong-way reflex at junctions: the habits you arrive with are correct.
The real challenge is the road, not the rules
The Foreign Office notes that many roads need repair, including in major towns, that rainy-season flooding can cause landslides and wreck surfaces, and that national park roads are mostly dirt tracks that can become impassable after heavy rain; a 4x4 is the sensible choice for safari areas. It advises avoiding driving outside major towns and cities at night. Tanzania’s WHO profile gives a 50 km/h urban limit and a 0.08 alcohol limit, the same as England and Wales, but road conditions make zero the wise default.
Police checkpoints
Checkpoints are frequent. If you are stopped, ask to see the officer’s identification. Fines should come with a government control number for payment, and the Foreign Office says police should not ask for on-the-spot payments. The emergency number is 112 for ambulance, fire and police.

0.08 g/dl according to Tanzania's WHO road safety profile, the same 80 mg figure used in England and Wales. Given the road conditions, drink nothing before driving, especially on unlit rural roads.
