Can an Indian Drive in Tanzania? — Yes, IDP Required, Same Side as Home

Tanzania is one of the great self-drive safari destinations, and for an Indian visitor it carries a quiet advantage: you already drive on the correct side. The permit, though, is stricter than you might assume.

The verdict: IDP required, not optional

You can drive in Tanzania on your Indian licence, but here the IDP is required — it is not the “recommended but rarely checked” status you see in much of Europe. Carry the International Driving Permit with your Indian licence; a temporary local permit is also available if you prefer. Apply for the IDP in India before you fly, because you cannot obtain one in Tanzania. Keep the IDP, your licence and passport together for police checks and 4WD rental desks alike.

What’s easier: you keep to the left

This is the part that works in your favour. India drives on the left, and Tanzania drives on the left too — so there is no side switch, no reversed roundabouts, none of the first-day disorientation that trips Indian drivers up in right-hand-drive countries. Your instinct at junctions is already correct, which lets you concentrate on the things that genuinely demand attention.

The real challenge: road condition, not rules

The rules themselves are modest — 50 km/h in towns, 80 km/h on rural roads — and the alcohol limit is 0.08, looser than India’s 0.03, though enforcement and unlit night roads make zero the wise habit. The thing that actually defines driving here is surface: away from the main highways, rural roads are rough, and the safari areas around the national parks need a proper 4WD, not a saloon. Drive to the road rather than the posted number, plan daylight stages, and don’t underestimate the distance between towns. Fuel runs around $1.10/litre, and the emergency number is 112.
