Tajikistan 2026: UK Licence for 30 Days, Plus the 1968 IDP
United Kingdom
Tajikistan
GOV.UK says a UK licence is valid for up to 30 days, and you must carry the 1968 IDP with it; a Russian or Tajik translation helps. Traffic keeps right on high mountain roads.
A British driver can take the wheel in Tajikistan on a UK licence for up to 30 days, with the 1968 IDP carried alongside it — and this is mountain-country driving, where the roads ask more of you than the paperwork. Two legal points need to land first: you switch from left- to right-hand traffic, and the alcohol limit is an absolute zero. After that, it is all about the roads themselves.
The licence verdict
GOV.UK says a valid UK licence lets you drive for up to 30 days, and that you must carry the 1968 International Driving Permit alongside it. The IDP cannot be bought outside the UK, so get it before you fly. GOV.UK also recommends, without it being a legal requirement, having the licence and IDP translated into Russian or Tajik for police checks, and notes that hire firms may insist on an IDP, a minimum age and a year of experience.
The side switch — and a zero alcohol limit
The UK drives on the left; Tajikistan drives on the right, so the first day is about retraining reflexes at roundabouts, forecourt exits and junctions. Keep it deliberate until it stops feeling backwards. On alcohol, the limit is 0.00, against the UK’s 0.08 — there is no “one drink” margin, so don’t drink and drive in any amount.
The real story: high mountains, not high speeds
The posted framework — 60 km/h urban, 90 km/h rural, 110 km/h on better roads — barely describes the experience. The famous Pamir Highway and its tributaries climb past 4,000 m through remote, often unsealed terrain where altitude, weather and surface dictate a far slower pace than any sign. Winter requirements are situational, so check conditions before travelling in the cold months and be ready for snow on the high passes. Carry fuel, water and offline maps; coverage and services vanish for long stretches. The emergency number is 112.
Confirm your documents with the Driving Permit Checker, read the wider rules on the Tajikistan driving guide, and use the Speed Limit Map to sanity-check limits along your route.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, for up to 30 days and only with the 1968 International Driving Permit. GOV.UK says you must carry the 1968 IDP alongside your UK licence and that it cannot be bought outside the UK. It also suggests a Russian or Tajik translation of both, though this is not a legal requirement.
No. The UK drives on the left; Tajikistan drives on the right. The side switch is the main adjustment for a British driver, particularly in your first hours on the road.
Zero — a 0.00 blood-alcohol limit, far stricter than the UK's 0.08. The only safe approach is no alcohol at all before driving.
