Can an Indian Drive in Taiwan? — IDP Required + the 30-Day Catch

Taiwan is a rewarding island to drive — fast freeways down the west coast, dramatic mountain roads in the centre, and orderly traffic by regional standards. For an Indian visitor the licence rule is the thing to get right first, because it is stricter than many people expect.

The verdict: IDP is required, not just recommended

An Indian licence holder can drive in Taiwan only with an International Driving Permit. This is not the soft “recommended” you see for many countries — Taiwan recognises the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP, and it is the document that makes your Indian licence usable here. Carry the IDP, your Indian licence and your passport together. Get the IDP in India before you leave; it is not available on arrival.

The 30-day catch most visitors miss

Here is the detail that trips people up: the IDP is recognised for roughly 30 days from entry. A normal holiday fits comfortably inside that window, but if you are staying longer the permit must be registered with the local motor-vehicle office (or otherwise renewed) to remain valid. Plan around the 30-day line if your trip runs long, rather than discovering the limit at a roadside check.

The side switch and a hard-enforced alcohol rule

India drives on the left; Taiwan drives on the right, so the usual reflex adjustment applies — give your first hour to quiet roads. On alcohol, Taiwan’s limit is 0.03, the same number as India’s, but enforcement is severe: heavy fines and the possibility of detention mean you should treat it as a flat zero before driving. Scooters are everywhere in the cities and filter through traffic constantly, so check your mirrors and blind spots far more often than you would at home.

Speeds and the practical picture

Limits run 50 km/h in towns, 70 km/h on rural roads and 110 km/h on the freeways. Fuel is reasonable at around $0.92 a litre, and the emergency number is 112. The freeways use an electronic tolling system, so ask your rental company how tolls are billed before you set off.
