Sweden on a Spanish Licence — No IDP Needed, but Watch the 0.02 Limit

For a Spanish driver, Sweden is about as low-friction as a foreign road trip gets. Your licence works without paperwork, you keep to the right exactly as at home, and the roads are superb. The one thing to genuinely recalibrate is your sense of what counts as a safe drink-drive margin — because in Sweden, there isn’t one.

Your Spanish licence is enough

A Spanish EU licence is fully valid in Sweden with no International Driving Permit required and no 90-day tourist cap. Sweden treats it identically to a domestic licence, so you can hire and drive with just your photocard and passport. There is no extra step to complete before you travel and nothing to translate.

The alcohol limit is the real culture shock

Spain runs a 0.05 BAC limit; Sweden’s is 0.02 — effectively a no-alcohol rule. More to the point, Sweden enforces it with frequent random breath checks, and penalties are income-linked day-fines that can climb fast, plus a possible ban. The relaxed “a glass of wine with lunch is fine” habit does not travel here. If you are behind the wheel, drink nothing at all.

Moose make rural roads a different kind of careful

Spain’s rural hazards rarely include a 600 kg animal stepping onto the carriageway. Sweden’s do. The yellow moose-warning triangles mark genuine crossing zones, and strikes are most common at dawn, dusk and after dark on forest-lined roads. Slow down where you see them and watch the verges in low light — a moose hit is a serious crash.

Speeds and the everyday details

Limits are 50 km/h in towns, 70 on rural roads and 110 on motorways — below Spanish motorway speeds — and cameras are widespread. A minor speeding fine starts around SEK 2,000. Fuel costs about $1.88/litre and 112 is the emergency number.
