Sweden on an Irish Licence — No IDP, but You Switch to the Right

For an Irish driver, Sweden is paperwork-free and infrastructure-perfect — but it is one of the few European trips where you have to retrain a basic reflex, because you leave the left and join the right.

The licence question, answered

Your Irish licence is fully valid in Sweden with no International Driving Permit required and no 90-day tourist limit — both countries are in the EU/EEA, so your photocard is treated the same as a Swedish one. Bring the physical licence and your passport, and you are road-legal the moment you collect the keys. That is the easy half.

The side switch is the real adjustment

Ireland drives on the left; Sweden drives on the right, and this is what actually trips Irish visitors up. The danger window is the first hour — pulling out of a fuel station onto the wrong lane, looking the wrong way at a junction, or taking a roundabout against the new flow (they now go anticlockwise). Don’t make your first Swedish drive a busy Stockholm street. Pick a quiet road, and consciously check your positioning at every turn until “keep right” stops feeling backwards.

Alcohol and moose: two things stricter than home

Sweden’s alcohol limit is 0.02 BAC, well below Ireland’s 0.05, and it is policed with routine random breath tests. The safe approach is none at all before driving. The second surprise is wildlife: those yellow moose-warning triangles mark genuine crossing zones. A moose strike at dusk is a serious crash, not a fender-bender, so slow on forest-edged roads at dawn, dusk and after dark.

Speeds and costs

Limits are 50 km/h in town, 70 rural and 110 on motorways — lower than Irish motorway speeds, and cameras are everywhere. A modest speeding fine starts around SEK 2,000. Fuel is roughly $1.88/litre and the emergency number is 112.
