Can an American Drive in Sri Lanka? — Only With an IDP, and You Switch Left
United States
Sri Lanka
An American licence on its own is NOT enough for Sri Lanka — an International Driving Permit is required, and it has to be endorsed locally by the Automobile Association of Ceylon before you drive. On top of that you switch to left-hand traffic. Town limit 50 km/h, drink-drive limit 0.06.
Sri Lanka is one of the few destinations where the paperwork genuinely matters before you can turn a key. For an American driver there are two real hurdles — a mandatory, locally endorsed permit, and traffic that runs on the opposite side from home.
The verdict for American licence holders
Your US licence alone is not sufficient. An International Driving Permit is required, and Sri Lanka adds a step most countries do not: the IDP has to be endorsed by the Automobile Association of Ceylon (AAC) after you arrive before it is valid to drive. Plan for that errand — or a temporary Sri Lankan permit — rather than assuming your US card and a plain IDP will do. Carry your licence, the endorsed IDP and your passport together at all times.
The second hurdle: driving on the left
Sri Lanka drives on the left; the United States on the right. That reversal is the practical learning curve, and it compounds with traffic that is busy, fast and full of three-wheelers, buses and motorbikes weaving for gaps. Take your first session somewhere quiet, keep to the left lane by default, and expect overtaking that does not match American habits.
Speeds and the alcohol rule
Posted limits are 50 km/h in towns, 70 km/h on rural roads and 100 km/h on the expressways. The expressway network is modern and orderly; ordinary roads are the opposite — congested, mixed-traffic and unpredictable, so the limit is rarely your constraint. The drink-drive limit is a stricter 0.06, below the US 0.08, and the only safe policy is none before driving. Save 118 or 119 for the police, 1990 for an ambulance and 111 for fire and rescue.
Before you set off
- Carry your US licence, an AAC-endorsed IDP and passport together.
- Treat left-hand traffic and dense urban roads as your two biggest adjustments.
- Confirm requirements with the Driving Permit Checker, read the full rules on our Sri Lanka driving guide, and check who pays driving fines abroad before relying on your cover.

Not on its own. American drivers must carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside their US licence, and the IDP needs to be endorsed by the Automobile Association of Ceylon (AAC) after arrival before it is valid to drive.
On the left. This is the reverse of the United States, so the side switch is a real adjustment on top of the licence paperwork — take your first drive somewhere quiet.
0.06 BAC, stricter than the US 0.08. Enforcement happens, so the safe approach is not to drink before driving.
