Sri Lanka on an Indian Licence — IDP Required, but No Side Switch

Sri Lanka is one of the easier overseas drives for an Indian traveller in feel, but it carries one firm requirement that trips people up if they don’t plan for it.

The verdict: licence yes, IDP required — and it must be endorsed

You can drive in Sri Lanka on your Indian licence, but only with a valid International Driving Permit, and here it is required rather than optional. There’s an extra step travellers often miss: your IDP needs to be endorsed locally before you drive, through the country’s automobile association — without that endorsement, rental firms and police may turn you away. Sort the IDP in India first, then arrange the endorsement on arrival, and keep your licence, IDP and passport together.

The reassuring part: Sri Lanka drives on the left, exactly like India. There’s no side switch, no backwards instinct at roundabouts — the documentation is the real hurdle, not the act of driving.

What the roads ask of you

Speed limits run 50 km/h in towns, 70 on rural roads and 100 on the expressways. The expressway network is modern and easy, but the ordinary roads are where the Sri Lankan driving experience lives: tuk-tuks weaving, buses that own the lane, cyclists, pedestrians and the occasional cow, all sharing space at once. It will feel familiar to an Indian driver, just on a smaller scale — stay patient and read the traffic rather than the rulebook.

The drink-drive limit is 0.06, marginally above India’s 0.03; treat it as no alcohol before driving. Fuel costs around $1.15 a litre, and the general emergency number is 112.
