Quick Answer

American drivers can use their US licence in Spain with an IDP strongly recommended. Spain stays on the right like home, but the alcohol limit drops from 0.08 to 0.05, motorways run faster at 120 km/h, and average-speed cameras push fines toward EUR 300 for serious overspeeds.

What Tourists Miss

Americans driving in Spain face EUR 300 fines for 20+ km/h over the limit — the BAC limit is 0.05 (stricter than the US 0.08) and average-speed camera coverage is extensive. An IDP is strongly recommended; police stops escalate without one.

Spain is one of the most comfortable European countries for an American to drive in — you stay on the right, the cars feel familiar, and the motorways are wide and well-built. The surprises are in enforcement and a couple of limits that run tighter than home.

Carry an International Driving Permit. Your US licence is accepted, but the IDP is the certified translation Spanish rental desks and the Guardia Civil expect to see beside it, and a stop without one tends to escalate. Get it from AAA before you leave — it cannot be issued in Spain. Keep it with your passport and the rental agreement; the driving permit checker confirms the requirement for your state.

Alcohol is the trap most Americans miss. Spain enforces 0.05, below the usual US 0.08, and runs frequent roadside breath tests that get heavier on the coast in summer. The cushion you are used to is not there — treat the limit as zero.

Speed is the other one. Motorways allow 120 km/h, faster than most US interstates at around 104, which lulls drivers into pushing further. Spain’s network of fixed gantries and average-speed (tramo) cameras measures you over whole sections rather than a single point. A modest overspeed costs about EUR 100; once you are 20 km/h or more over, expect closer to EUR 300, usually halved if paid early. The speeding fine calculator gives a quick estimate, and if you want the wider picture on who pays foreign penalties, our guide to driving fines abroad covers it.

The car must carry a reflective vest within reach and warning triangles or a V16 beacon. Rural roads cap at 90, towns at 50, fuel is about $1.70/litre (cheapest at supermarket forecourts), and the emergency number is 112. For the full ruleset, see the Spain driving guide.
