Irish Drivers in Spain 2026: Keep Right, Mind City ZBE Rules

Spain is one of the simplest drive-abroad trips from Ireland on paper. An Irish licence is accepted as it is, the motorway limit of 120 km/h matches home, and the general alcohol limit of 0.5 g/l is the same as Ireland’s 50 mg. What needs attention is local: the side of the road, Spanish town speeds and city emission zones.

Keep right

Spain drives on the right. The reflexes that catch Irish drivers come in the first hour: pulling out of a forecourt, a roundabout that now turns the other way, the glance in the wrong direction. Collect the car somewhere quiet and stay deliberate at junctions until it settles.

Town speeds are lower than they look

Article 50 of the Reglamento General de Circulación sets 30 km/h on urban streets with one lane in each direction, 20 km/h where road and pavement share one level, and 50 km/h only on streets with two or more lanes each way, unless signs say otherwise. Outside towns, motorways and dual carriageways are 120 km/h and other roads 90. Up to 30 km/h over on a 120 km/h road costs EUR 100 without points; the speeding fine calculator shows the other bands. Drivers in their first two years are held to 0.3 g/l alcohol instead of 0.5.

City low-emission zones

Law 7/2021 requires towns of more than 50,000 people to adopt low-emission zones. Madrid enforces its zone around the clock and Barcelona’s ring-road zone runs on weekdays 07:00-20:00. Kit

A reflective vest is required. Spanish-registered cars, hire cars included, must carry a connected V-16 beacon, which has replaced warning triangles for them since 1 January 2026. A car driven from Ireland may still use its triangles. Emergencies: 112.
