Quick Answer

Yes — an Indian licence holder can drive in Spain carrying an International Driving Permit with their Indian licence. The biggest physical adjustment is the side switch: India drives on the left, Spain on the right. The modern catch, though, is the ZBE low-emission zones now gating the centres of Madrid, Barcelona and dozens of other cities — a rental car may not be allowed in, and an unregistered entry is fined by camera.

Spain is built for a road trip — fast, well-signed motorways, a dramatic coast and hill towns the trains skip. For an Indian driver the paperwork is straightforward; the things that actually need attention are one habit and one piece of modern city admin.

Can an Indian drive in Spain? Yes, with an IDP

You can drive in Spain on your Indian licence as long as you carry an International Driving Permit with it. Non-EU visitors are permitted to drive on a foreign licence backed by an IDP for up to six months, which covers any normal trip. Bring the IDP, your Indian licence and your passport together, and arrange the IDP in India before you fly — you can’t get one in Spain.

The biggest adjustment: switching to the right

India drives on the left; Spain drives on the right. This is the single thing most likely to catch you out, and the risk window is your first day — pulling out of a fuel station, joining a roundabout that now flows the other way, or a reflex glance in the wrong direction. Spain’s motorways are excellent and signage is clear, which helps, but take your first hour on quiet roads rather than central Madrid.

The modern trap: ZBE low-emission zones

Here’s the catch that surprises visitors. Spanish cities now run ZBE low-emission zones that gate their centres — Madrid and Barcelona among many — and they apply to rental cars too. Cameras read plates, and an unregistered or non-compliant entry is fined. Before you drive into a city centre, check whether your route crosses a zone; our Spain ZBE fines guide explains how they work and how to avoid an unexpected penalty.

Speeds, alcohol and the fine band

Motorways run to 120 km/h, rural roads 90, towns 50, with widespread fixed and mobile cameras. Spain’s alcohol limit is 0.05, looser than India’s 0.03 but still best treated as zero before driving. A 10-km/h speeding penalty lands around EUR 100, and fuel is roughly €1.70/litre. By law the car must carry a warning triangle and reflective vest.

Yes — carry an International Driving Permit alongside your Indian licence and passport. Non-EU visitors can drive in Spain on a foreign licence with an IDP for up to six months. Arrange the IDP in India before you travel.

Check if your licence is valid

No. India drives on the left and Spain on the right, so there is a full side switch. The danger window is your first day — pulling out, joining a roundabout, or glancing the wrong way at a junction. Start on quiet roads.

ZBEs are low-emission zones in Spanish cities that restrict which vehicles can enter central areas. They apply to visitors and rental cars too, with camera enforcement and fines, so check whether your route enters one before you drive into Madrid or Barcelona.
