Quick Answer

Chinese visitors can drive in Spain for up to six months, but because a Chinese licence is not in Latin script you need an IDP — or a sworn Spanish translation — alongside it. Rental desks and the Guardia Civil expect to see one. Spain's alcohol limit of 0.05 is also looser than China's 0.02, not stricter, so the danger is over-relaxing, not over-tightening.

Driving in Spain is genuinely easy for Chinese visitors — you already drive on the right, the motorway limit of 120 matches home, and the roads are well signed and well surfaced outside the big cities. The single thing that decides whether your trip starts smoothly is a piece of paper most people underestimate: the translation of your licence.

Your licence needs to be readable

A Chinese driving licence is printed in Chinese characters. To a rental clerk in Málaga or a Guardia Civil officer at a checkpoint, it is unreadable, and that is exactly the problem an International Driving Permit solves — it restates your entitlement in a standard multilingual format they recognise. Spain accepts it (or an official sworn translation) for visits of up to six months. Get the IDP in China before you fly; it cannot be issued once you’ve landed, and without it a rental desk can simply refuse to release the car. Carry the IDP, your Chinese licence and your passport as a set.

Don’t relax just because the limit looks higher

Here’s the counter-intuitive part. China runs a strict 0.02 blood-alcohol limit; Spain’s is 0.05 for experienced drivers. It feels more permissive, but that is a trap — Spain drops to 0.03 for anyone with under two years on a licence, breath testing is routine, and a 0.05 offence starts around €500, far above the cost of a taxi. Treat it as zero. Speed enforcement is heavy too: both fixed and mobile cameras work the major roads, and a typical speeding penalty is about €100.

On the road

Limits are 50 in town, 90 on rural roads, 120 on motorways; fuel is roughly $1.70/litre; the emergency number is 112. Police can fine non-residents on the spot, so carry a card or cash — our guide to how driving fines abroad are collected explains why settling promptly is usually wise for visitors. For the full set of Spanish rules see the Spain driving guide, and confirm your exact paperwork with the Driving Permit Checker before departure.

Frequently Asked Questions

In practice yes. A Chinese licence isn't readable to Spanish police or rental staff, so an IDP (issued in China before you travel) or a sworn translation is what they ask for. Carry it with your licence and passport. The permit must be arranged at home — you cannot get one in Spain.

Up to six months as a visitor. Beyond that Spain does not have a direct exchange agreement with China, so a longer stay means sitting the Spanish test. For a normal holiday the six-month window is never an issue.

0.05 BAC for experienced drivers — looser than China's 0.02 — but 0.03 for drivers with under two years' experience. Cameras and roadside breath tests are widespread, with a 0.05 breach starting around EUR 500.
