For an Austrian driver, Spain is about as low-friction as driving abroad gets: same licence rules, same side of the road, same alcohol limit. The road notes are gentle, but two of them matter for your wallet.

The licence verdict for Austrian drivers

Good news up front — your Austrian licence is fully valid in Spain, and no International Driving Permit is needed. Both countries are in the EU, so there is no extra paperwork to arrange. The thing that actually costs Austrian drivers money

Speed cameras. Spain runs a widespread network of fixed and mobile cameras across its motorways and main roads, and it does not rely on warnings — penalties are issued briskly, often on the spot. The motorway limit is 120 km/h (below Austria’s 130), rural roads 90, and towns 50. The autobahn reflex of sitting comfortably above the limit is the expensive habit to drop here; a 10-over penalty starts around EUR 100. Carry a card or cash, because roadside fines are paid promptly.

What needs no adjustment

The familiar parts: Spain drives on the right, like Austria, so there is no side switch, and the drink-drive limit is the same 0.05 BAC you know — no recalibration, though enforcement is strict, so leave a clear margin. One small kit note: Spain requires a warning triangle and a reflective vest in the car, so check the rental has them.

Practicalities

Fuel is around $1.70/litre, and the emergency number is 112. Distances are long and the motorways are excellent, so plan fuel stops on the quieter interior routes.
