A Swedish driver arrives in South Korea with two big advantages — the same side of the road and a deep instinct for sober, disciplined driving. What you give up is the easy European licence reciprocity, and what you gain is a noisier, denser road environment than home.

The licence verdict for Swedish drivers

Your Swedish licence is not valid on its own in South Korea. You need an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, carried with your licence and passport, and valid for one year from the date of entry. Across the EU your Swedish licence travels without paperwork; that ends at Korea’s border. Arrange the IDP in Sweden before you fly, because Korea does not issue it and rental desks will not release a car without it.

What carries over from Sweden

Both countries drive on the right, so there is no traffic-side switch — the single biggest hazard for long-haul drivers simply isn’t there. And the Swedish habit of treating alcohol and driving as incompatible serves you perfectly: Korea’s 0.03 BAC limit is marginally looser than Sweden’s strict 0.02, but enforcement is frequent and unforgiving, so keep doing exactly what you do at home.

The real change: pace and signage

This is where Korea feels different. Seoul traffic is fast and assertive, lane discipline is loose, and the calm predictability of Swedish roads is gone. Add hangeul signage that dominates beyond the main expressways, and navigation becomes the hard part — set offline maps in a language you read before you pull away, and give merging traffic room.

Limits run 100 km/h on expressways, 80 rural and 50 in towns. The emergency number is 112, and a basic speeding penalty starts near KRW 30,000 (≈ €20), with dense cameras throughout.
