Quick Answer

A French licence does not stand alone in South Korea — a 1949 Geneva International Driving Permit is legally required to go with it. There's no side switch, but the alcohol limit is a strict 0.03 and motorway signage runs in hangul, so set up navigation before you drive.

A French driver tends to assume the EU licence travels well, and across Europe it does. South Korea is the reminder that “international” has a specific legal meaning — and your card alone won’t satisfy it.

The licence rule that trips up EU drivers

South Korea recognises the 1949 Geneva Convention International Driving Permit, and your French licence must be carried together with one. A French card on its own is not accepted at rental desks or by police, and there is no fixing it locally — the IDP has to be arranged in France before departure, where it is a routine application. It is valid for one year from entry. Confirm exactly what you need on the Driving Permit Checker, and keep the IDP, your licence and passport together.

No side switch — but two real changes

There is no left-right switch: South Korea drives on the right, just like France, so orientation is one thing you don’t relearn. What does change is the 0.03 alcohol limit, stricter than France’s 0.05 and backed by routine roadside checks — treat it as no drinking before driving. The other is hangul signage: away from major routes, directions and place names appear in Korean script, so set your navigation app to your destination before you pull away rather than trying to read signs on the move.

Speeds, fines and fuel

City driving is assertive and the motorways are good, with limits of 110 km/h on expressways, 80 rural and 50 in towns. A 10 km/h-over fine is modest at around KRW 30,000 (≈ €20), but speed cameras are dense and well-marked. Korean cars must carry a warning triangle. Petrol is about $1.42/litre and the emergency number is 112. Read the full picture on the South Korea driving guide and estimate a penalty with the Speeding Fine Calculator.
