The Garden Route, the winelands and Kruger make South Africa a classic American road trip. Three things differ from home: the side of the road, the documents insurers want and the alcohol limit. Sort them before you collect the car.
You’ll be driving on the left
The US drives on the right; South Africa drives on the left. Everything mirrors: the gearstick sits to your left, roundabouts flow clockwise and every junction instinct points the wrong way. The first hour is the risky part, usually when pulling out of a fuel station or a hotel car park. Start on a quiet street and avoid Cape Town traffic or a mountain pass on day one.
Licence and IDP
The U.S. State Department is direct: “International driver’s licenses are not required,” and a valid licence from any US state or territory “is valid for stays of less than six months.” So a normal trip needs only your state licence and passport. Alcohol, speed and safety
The limit is 0.05%, lower than the US 0.08%, so keep it at zero. Limits are 60 km/h in towns, 100 on rural roads and 120 on highways; the speeding fine calculator gives a rough idea of penalties. Fatal crashes are common, often involving pedestrians, and roads become slippery in the wet. Away from the cities, potholes, poor lighting and animals make night driving risky. Carjacking and robbery are common, especially after dark and around traffic lights, junctions, petrol stations and driveways: keep doors locked, windows up and valuables out of sight, and if you are targeted, hand over the car and do not resist.
