Quick Answer

South Africa drives on the left — the opposite of the US — an International Driving Permit is required, and the alcohol limit drops from 0.08 to 0.05. The national routes are excellent, but cities carry a real carjacking risk worth planning around.

What Tourists Miss

Americans driving in South Africa face ZAR 1250-2500 fines for 20+ km/h over the limit — the BAC limit is 0.05% (stricter than the US 0.08%). Traffic drives on the LEFT (rental manuals rarely flag this). IDP is mandatory — AAA issues one in ~10 days.

The Garden Route, the winelands and Kruger make South Africa a dream American road trip — but three things differ from driving at home, and rental paperwork tends to mention none of them clearly. Sort all three before you collect the car and the rest is pure scenery.

You’ll be driving on the left

The US drives on the right; South Africa drives on the left, and the rental manual rarely says so plainly. Everything mirrors — the gearstick is on your left, roundabouts turn clockwise, and your every junction instinct points the wrong way. The first hour is where it bites, usually pulling out of a fuel station or a hotel lot. Take a quiet street first, keep your speed down, and don’t pair the switch with Cape Town traffic or a mountain pass on day one.

The IDP is mandatory — and slow to get

An International Driving Permit is required alongside your state licence; rental companies won’t release a car without it. AAA issues one in roughly ten days, so don’t leave it to the week before you fly — you can’t obtain it in South Africa. Confirm the requirement with our driving permit checker.

A stricter alcohol limit, and steep speeding fines

The drink-drive limit is 0.05, tighter than the US 0.08, with no real margin — keep it at zero. Speed enforcement bites too: a 10 km/h overshoot costs ZAR 500-1,250, but go 20+ km/h over and you’re looking at ZAR 1,250-2,500 (around €65-130). Size yours with the speeding fine calculator. Beyond that, the real-world hazard is urban carjacking at quiet intersections in Johannesburg and parts of Cape Town: keep doors locked and windows up in traffic, valuables out of sight, and stay alert at deserted lights after dark. Motorways run 120 km/h, rural roads 100, towns 60; fuel is near $1.12/litre, and emergencies are 10111 (police) or 112 from a mobile. The full breakdown is on our South Africa driving guide.
