Can an Indian Drive in South Africa? — Yes, Same Side, IDP Required

South Africa is one of the great self-drive countries, and for an Indian visitor it carries a hidden advantage: you already drive on the correct side. The trip rewards a bit of preparation on documents and an honest respect for how the roads vary.

The verdict for Indian licence holders

You can drive in South Africa on your Indian licence, but there is a documentation catch: your licence must be in English with a photograph, or you must carry an International Driving Permit with it. The IDP is the clean way to satisfy this — get it in India before you fly, and keep it with your licence and passport. Both India and South Africa drive on the left, so unlike most overseas trips there is no side switch and no roundabout relearning.

The split between brilliant routes and risky cities

South Africa’s national routes are excellent — wide, well-surfaced and a pleasure to drive.
