Can a Chinese Driver Use Their Licence in South Africa? — IDP Required + Left-Side Driving

South Africa is one of the great self-drive countries — Garden Route, the Cape, long open national roads — but for a driver coming from China there are two non-negotiables to sort before you turn a key.

The licence answer: yes, but the IDP is compulsory

You can drive in South Africa on your Chinese licence only if you carry an International Driving Permit with it. This is not the soft “recommended” you see for some countries: a Chinese licence is not printed in English, and South African law and every rental company require a translation, which the IDP provides. Arrange it in China before departure — it cannot be issued locally. Carry the IDP, your Chinese licence and your passport as a set, and your licence covers stays of up to 12 months.

The left-hand road is the real challenge

China drives on the right; South Africa drives on the left. For most Chinese visitors this is a bigger deal than the paperwork. The gearstick is on your left, the mirror checks are reversed, and roundabouts turn the “wrong” way. Give yourself a quiet first drive before you tackle Johannesburg or Cape Town traffic, and stay deliberate at every junction.

Speeds, alcohol and a hazard the numbers hide

Limits are 60 km/h in town, 100 on rural roads and 120 on the motorways (N-routes) — close enough to home that the speeds themselves will not surprise you. The drink-drive limit is 0.05 BAC, more relaxed than China’s 0.02, but enforcement is genuine; treat it as zero. Drift 10 km/h over and a typical fine runs around ZAR 500–1,250 (≈ €25–65).

The hazard the data does not capture is security: keep doors locked and valuables out of sight in cities, avoid stopping in isolated spots after dark, and plan fuel stops on long rural stretches — fuel runs about $1.12 a litre and attended stations are the norm.
