Canadian Licence in South Africa 2026: Valid, IDP Advised

South Africa rewards a road trip like few places: the Garden Route, the winelands, the long highways through the Karoo. Canadians adapt to it quickly, but the paperwork deserves a moment before the flight and the side of the road deserves your full attention after it.

Your licence, and why an IDP still earns its place

Global Affairs Canada is clear that you may drive in South Africa on a valid Canadian licence. The same advice strongly recommends an International Driving Permit, and the reason is money rather than law: without one it can be “extremely difficult” to get insurance for a rental, and insurers and rental firms often want an IDP or a South African licence before they honour a claim, even if nobody asked for it at the counter. Driving on the left

Canada drives on the right; South Africa drives on the left, and that’s the adjustment that takes real focus. The wheel feels mirrored, roundabouts flow clockwise, and your instinct at a turn points the wrong way. The first hour is the risky one, usually leaving a fuel stop or hotel car park. Take a quiet road first and don’t pair the switch with a busy city or a mountain pass on day one.

Alcohol, speed and the cities

The drink-drive limit is 0.05, below Canada’s 0.08, so keep it at zero. Open roads are excellent, with motorways at 120 km/h, rural roads 100 and towns 60. The genuine hazard is urban carjacking at quiet intersections in Johannesburg and parts of Cape Town: keep doors locked and windows up in traffic, keep valuables out of sight, and be cautious at deserted lights after dark.
