Can an American Drive in Somalia? — IDP Advised, Right-Hand Traffic
United States
Somalia
An American licence holder can drive in Somalia on a US licence with an International Driving Permit alongside it — carry both with your passport. Traffic is on the right (same as home), the blood-alcohol limit is a flat zero, and posted speed limits are loosely enforced and poorly signed, so road sense matters far more than the sign.
Somalia is not a casual self-drive destination, and an honest page serves you better than a padded one. If you are going to be behind the wheel here, the licence question is the easy part — the road environment is the hard part. Here is what is actually known.
Can a US licence holder drive in Somalia?
Yes. An American licence is accepted for short visits, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to carry alongside it. The IDP is a multilingual translation of your US licence, which matters at checkpoints where English is not a given. Bring your American licence, the IDP and your passport, and keep them together — you will be asked for documents more often than at home. Sort the IDP before you fly; it is issued in the US, not in Somalia.
One thing in your favour — the driving side
Somalia drives on the right, exactly as the United States does. There is no left-hand switch to unlearn, no reversed roundabouts, no reflexive glance the wrong way. That removes the single most common tripwire for tourists abroad, and on roads this demanding, one fewer thing to manage is worth having.
A zero alcohol limit
The blood-alcohol limit is zero — there is no “one drink” margin like the 0.08 you may be used to across most US states. If you are driving, do not drink at all. This is the clearest, hardest rule on the page, and the one with no grey area.
Speeds are posted but not the real constraint
Urban roads are signed at 50 km/h, rural roads around 80, and faster roads near 100, but signage is sparse and enforcement is inconsistent, so the numbers are a weak guide. The genuine hazards are road surface, other traffic and conditions outside your control. Drive to what you can see, not to the sign, keep speeds conservative, and avoid driving after dark. The emergency number listed is 112, though response cannot be assumed — your own caution is the real safety system here.
Before you commit to driving at all, weigh it against a hired driver, which is how most foreign visitors get around. If you do drive, confirm your paperwork with the Driving Permit Checker and read the wider country notes on our Somalia driving guide. Yes. Somalia drives on the right, the same as the United States, so there is no side switch to relearn — one fewer thing to think about on an already demanding road network.
Somalia applies a zero blood-alcohol limit — well below the 0.08 most US states use. Treat it as no alcohol at all before driving.
