Slovenia is a brilliant drive β compact, mountainous, and quick to cross β but for British visitors it stacks three adjustments on top of each other from the first kilometre. None is hard once you know it’s coming. The trouble is when they arrive together and unannounced.
You’re on the right now
Slovenia drives on the right, and after a lifetime on the left that takes real concentration. The danger window is the first hour: joining a roundabout that now flows the other way, glancing the wrong direction at a junction, drifting wide on a left turn. Take your first stretch on quiet roads, not in central Ljubljana, and say “stay right” out loud at every turn until it sticks. Don’t compound it with a long alpine pass on day one.
A stricter alcohol limit than home
England’s drink-drive limit is 0.08; Slovenia’s is 0.05 β lower, and enforced. The safe read is simple: if you’re driving, don’t drink at all. Penalties stretch to heavy fines and on-the-spot licence confiscation, and summer enforcement on the coast and mountain roads is genuine.
The vignette and the licence paperwork
Slovenia’s motorways need a digital e-vignette before you join them β cameras read your plate, there are no booths, and driving without one costs far more than the β¬16 a weekly vignette runs to.
