An American in Slovakia drives on the familiar side of the road, which removes the biggest stress of driving abroad. The rules that cost visitors money are elsewhere: documents, alcohol and the motorway toll.
Licence plus permit
Canada’s travel advice lists two documents for driving in Slovakia: the home licence and an international driving permit. The same advice applies to an American licence. In the US the permit is issued by AAA under the 1949 Geneva Convention; it cannot be bought once you have left. Carry both with your passport. At home the line is 0.08. Slovakia has zero tolerance, and UK travel advice warns that if a test finds any alcohol in your system the fine can reach EUR 1,300. Plan the driving days without a drink, including the morning after.
The e-vignette
Motorways and expressways are tolled by an electronic vignette tied to the number plate rather than by booths. Buy it from the national motorway company’s portal or at a sales point before joining; validity runs from one day to a year. Speeds, kit and fines
The WHO profile gives 50 km/h in towns, 90 outside them and 130 on motorways, which is faster than most US interstates. The car must carry a first-aid kit, a warning triangle and high-visibility vests, and in winter it must be equipped for snow and ice. Traffic fines are paid on the spot. Winter tyres in Slovakia — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in Slovakia whenever conditions are wintry — Cars (M1/N1): no fixed dates — required whenever compacted snow, ice or frost covers the road. Buses/lorries (M2/M3/N2/N3): 15 Nov - 31 Mar.
