Buy Slovakia's electronic motorway vignette on eznamka.sk before joining a motorway; it is tied to the plate. Carry an IDP with your Indian licence, drive on the right, and take no alcohol at all, since the limit is effectively zero. Speed limits are 50, 90 and 130 km/h.
The first task in Slovakia comes before the first motorway kilometre: the vignette. Slovakia charges for motorway use through an electronic vignette linked to your number plate, sold on the official eznamka.sk portal, and there are no toll booths. Nothing stops you driving onto the D1, but plate-reading cameras check every car. In a hire car, ask the desk whether the vignette is already on the plate. Paperwork for an Indian licence
Carry an International Driving Permit with your Indian licence and passport. India and Slovakia are both parties to the 1949 Geneva convention under which India issues its permits. Slovakia’s police note that a permit issued abroad stops entitling its holder to drive once they take up residence in Slovakia, so it is a visitor’s document. Arrange it in India; it cannot be issued in Slovakia. An EU licence is valid in Slovakia, but yours is not, which is why the permit is not optional.
Keeping right
India drives on the left; Slovakia on the right. The risky moments come on the first day: pulling out, joining a roundabout that now flows anticlockwise, and the reflex glance the wrong way at junctions. Take the first hour on quiet roads rather than in central Bratislava.

The urban gap is the one to respect: 50 is a hard number in a Slovak town, 20 lower than the Indian cap.
No margin on alcohol
The UK Foreign Office warns that any alcohol in a driver’s system can bring a fine of up to EUR 1,300, licence confiscation and possible imprisonment. India allows 0.03%; in Slovakia, plan on none.

A seatbelt ticket can cost more than ten times what you would pay at home. Wear it, front and rear.
What the car must carry
Slovakia requires a first-aid kit, reflective vest and warning triangle. India lists a fire extinguisher and a first-aid kit as required, with the triangle only recommended and no vest. A rental should carry the Slovak items, but check them at the desk because you are the one fined if they are missing.
Winter
The Foreign Office says cars must be equipped for severe conditions in winter, and road markings can be hard to see in bad weather. Check that a winter rental has winter tyres. The Slovakia driving guide lists the equipment the car must carry.
Emergencies
One number covers everything: 112 for police, ambulance and fire. At home, 100, 108 and 101 are the separate lines, with 112 as the general one, so the Slovak habit is simpler.
Renting at Bratislava or Vienna
Many visitors fly into Bratislava, while others arrive from Vienna, which is close by road. Whichever desk you use, show the Indian licence and the IDP together, ask for the vignette to be confirmed on the plate, and walk around the car with the agent. The Slovak police take document checks seriously, and a missing vignette or permit is far cheaper to fix at the counter than at the roadside.
Plan your fuel and breaks on the D1 corridor and in the mountains of the north, where stretches between towns are longer and weather can change quickly. Daylight hours are short in winter, and the roads that look empty on the map are not always cleared quickly after snow.
Phone, fuel and tolls on the road
Download offline maps before you leave the airport, as roaming may be expensive, and keep a charging cable in the car. Fuel stations are frequent on the main corridors. Because the vignette is electronic and linked to the plate, double-check the registration number you typed, since a single wrong character is the commonest reason a vignette appears invalid.

Winter tyres in Slovakia — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in Slovakia whenever conditions are wintry — Cars (M1/N1): no fixed dates — required whenever compacted snow, ice or frost covers the road. Buses/lorries (M2/M3/N2/N3): 15 Nov - 31 Mar.
