Slovakia on a Chinese Licence — No Side Switch, but Vignette & Zero Alcohol

Slovakia is a compact, increasingly well-built country to drive — good motorways, scenic mountain roads, easy distances. For a Chinese visitor the road manners are familiar; it’s the documents and a couple of local rules that need attention first.

The reassuring part: there is no side switch. Both China and Slovakia drive on the right, so a Chinese driver brings the correct instincts to junctions, roundabouts and overtaking. That removes the hazard that complicates most foreign trips and lets you concentrate on the rules instead.

The licence question is where care is needed. Carry an International Driving Permit with your Chinese licence and passport, and — this is the important bit — confirm acceptance with your rental company before you book. Because China is not party to the main international driving conventions, recognition of a Chinese licence abroad can be patchy, and an IDP plus an explicit nod from the rental firm is the way to avoid a problem at the counter. Don’t leave it to chance on arrival.

Two local rules then matter. First, the motorway vignette: Slovakia charges for motorway use through an electronic vignette, and driving the motorways without a valid one risks a fine. Buy it online or at a border-area station before you join the network. Second, winter tyres are required in the cold season, which is no formality given Slovakia’s mountain passes and real winters — a hire car booked in season should be fitted, but confirm it.

On the documented figures: motorways allow 130 km/h, rural roads 90, and towns 50, with both fixed cameras and mobile patrols in use. The alcohol limit is zero — stricter than China’s 0.02 — so don’t drink before driving at all. Fuel runs around €1.62 a litre, the emergency number is 112, and a typical fine for a minor offence falls in the €30–100 range, often payable on the spot.
