Singapore on a US Licence — You'll Drive on the LEFT (SGD 150 Fine)

Most Americans who rent in Singapore are stopping over for a few days, not road-tripping, and the city’s public transport is so good that a car is a luxury rather than a necessity. But if you do take the wheel — to reach the zoo, Sentosa or a day trip into Malaysia — there is one change that overrides everything else on your first drive.

Singapore drives on the left. Coming from the right-hand traffic of the US, this is the adjustment that genuinely matters: you sit on the right of the car, the gearstick is on your left, and every instinct at a junction points you the wrong way. Roundabouts flow clockwise, and the classic mistake is drifting into the right lane after a turn. Give yourself a slow first half-hour somewhere quiet before you join the expressways.

Your US licence is valid here for up to 12 months, so no conversion is needed for a holiday. An International Driving Permit is not strictly mandatory, but it carries an official translation of your licence and most rental companies will ask to see one — sort it before you fly, since you cannot obtain it in Singapore. The second thing to respect is enforcement. Singapore is small, wealthy and watched: speed cameras are dense, and penalties are calibrated to deter rather than to nudge. Cross 20 km/h over the limit and you are looking at roughly SGD 150 (about EUR 100) plus four demerit points, with the points following you even as a visitor through the rental agreement. Limits are modest by American standards — 50 km/h in urban areas, 70 on rural roads and 90 on expressways — so keeping a light foot is easy once you stop expecting interstate speeds.

The drink-drive limit is 0.08 BAC, the same figure as most US states, but the consequences for exceeding it are far heavier, including possible jail time, so treat it as a hard line. Fuel runs around $1.98 a litre, which feels steep until you remember how little you’ll drive.

One last point worth knowing: owning a car here is famously expensive because of the Certificate of Entitlement system, which is why rental rates and parking are higher than you might expect.
