Singapore on a UK Licence — Same Side, Same Mirror, but Demerit Points and ERP Tolls

Can you drive in Singapore on a UK licence? Yes, but only for 30 days on the card alone. GOV.UK says that after a month you need a 1949 international driving permit alongside the licence, and that IDPs cannot be bought outside the UK. If there is any chance your stay or your hire runs longer, pick one up before you fly. Once that is settled, Singapore is the easiest country in Asia for a British driver to start in, because traffic keeps to the left.

Thirty days, then the permit

The British government’s wording is precise. Up to 30 days: UK licence. After 30 days: UK licence plus the 1949 IDP. Rental firms often go further and want an IDP from the first day, along with a minimum age and a year of driving experience. Read the hire terms before you book rather than at the counter.

People who move to Singapore on a longer-term pass, or become permanent residents, must switch to a Singaporean licence. The IDP is a visitor’s tool, not a long-term solution.

Singapore and the UK compared

Two rows deserve attention. The expressway limit is 90 km/h, about 56 mph. That will feel slow after the M25, and cameras enforce it. And while the alcohol limit reads the same as in England, the consequences are far heavier.

What a mistake costs

Singapore’s fixed penalties are not dramatic in cash, but the points build fast:

• Speeding by a small margin: SGD 150 and 4 demerit points
• A larger excess: SGD 150 and 6 points
• Serious speeding: SGD 150-1,000, 8-12 points and a court date
• Running a red light: SGD 400 and 12 points
• Phone in hand: SGD 1,000-2,000 and 12 points
• No seatbelt: SGD 120

Breath tests and imprisonment

GOV.UK says driving under the influence carries serious penalties including imprisonment, and that traffic police regularly breath-test drivers. Do not treat the familiar 80 mg figure as permission to have a pint. Leave the car parked if you are drinking.

ERP gantries on the way into town

Singapore charges for road use electronically. Gantries over busy roads deduct a fee automatically during peak periods from a unit fitted in the car. With a hire car, ask at the desk how charges are billed to you, so that nothing turns up later with an admin fee attached.

If you have an accident

Stay at the scene if anyone is hurt or anything is damaged. Swap contact details, and report it to the police within 24 hours. That is a legal duty under GOV.UK’s summary, not a suggestion. Save 999 for police and 995 for ambulance and fire.

Arriving by car

Overland arrivals usually come via Malaysia. A car not registered in Singapore needs a vehicle entry permit, applied for on the OneMotoring website before you reach the border, and every vehicle leaving is checked against police records.
