Singapore on a Swedish Licence — Accepted With an IDP, But You Switch to the Left

Sweden has one of the strictest driving cultures in Europe, so the surprise in Singapore is not the rules being tighter — it is the things that change shape. The roads are excellent and orderly, which will feel familiar; the side of the road and the alcohol figure on paper will not.

Your Swedish licence is accepted for a tourist stay, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to carry with it. Within the EU your licence stands alone; Singapore is outside that system, so the IDP is the cheap standard translation that keeps the rental desk and any police stop straightforward. Bring it with your licence and passport.

The main adjustment is the side of the road. Singapore drives on the left, the mirror of Sweden. The errors cluster in your first hour — pulling out of a car park, merging into a new flow, taking a roundabout that now circulates the other way. Pick up the car somewhere quiet, keep the speed low, and consciously check the mirror that has moved to your other side until the pattern feels natural.

Speeds are modest and won’t trouble a Swedish driver used to careful limits: 50 km/h in town, up to 70 on rural roads, and 90 on the expressways, enforced by a dense camera network with tight tolerances. The one number to read carefully is alcohol. The legal limit is 0.08 BAC, dramatically higher than Sweden’s 0.02 — but do not mistake that for leniency. Singapore’s drink-driving penalties are among the harshest anywhere, with imprisonment a real outcome, so the only sensible standard is exactly what you already practise: nothing before driving. A typical speeding fine starts around SGD 150 (about EUR 100) plus demerit points.
