Singapore on a Dutch Licence — You Switch to the Left, and Tolls Track You

For a Dutch driver, the headline in Singapore is the one you cannot read your way out of: you change sides. The Netherlands drives on the right, Singapore on the left, and the danger window is your first day — pulling out of the rental car park, taking a roundabout that now flows clockwise, or glancing the wrong way at a junction. Take that first hour somewhere quiet rather than in city traffic, and be deliberate about your road position until left-hand driving stops feeling backwards.

Once the side switch settles, Singapore is genuinely easy to drive — excellent roads, clear signage, disciplined traffic. The differences that remain are about cost and record-keeping rather than chaos. Expressways cap at 90 km/h and urban roads at 50, both lower than the Dutch 100/130 you are used to, so reset your sense of pace. A speeding ticket is around SGD 150 (≈ EUR 100) plus 4 demerit points; the points attach to your driving record, which matters more than the modest cash figure. The drink-drive limit reads as 0.08, looser than the Dutch 0.05, but that is misleading. Penalties are heavy and can include imprisonment, so there is no margin to enjoy. Don’t drink and drive here, full stop.

The other surprise is Electronic Road Pricing. ERP gantries charge you automatically as you pass during busy periods, deducting from a stored-value card fitted to the car. Ask the rental desk to confirm the card is in place and topped up, or an unpaid gantry comes back as an admin fee.
