After Rome or Naples traffic, Singapore feels almost silent: wide lanes, English signs and rules that are enforced. For an Italian the work is in the preparation, because both the permit and the side of the road differ from home.

Bring the permit
Global Affairs Canada says visitors must carry an International Driving Permit, and the UK government’s permit table lists the 1949 IDP for car hire and stays over 30 days. Italy belongs to the 1949 Geneva Convention, so the permit issued by the Motorizzazione is the model to get. Apply before you fly and carry it with your Italian licence and passport. Keeping left
Italy keeps right; Singapore keeps left. You sit on the right of the car, and the indicator and wiper stalks may be swapped. Most mistakes come at quiet moments: drifting to the wrong side after a turn, or looking the wrong way at a junction in a car park. Take the first drive gently, ideally outside rush hour, and say the rule aloud at each turn: “left lane, look right.”
Gantries instead of toll booths
Electronic Road Pricing gantries on expressways and around the city charge the car’s in-vehicle unit during operating hours. There are no charges on Sundays and public holidays. A short balance turns into a violation, so ask the rental company how the unit is topped up, and keep a margin on the card rather than the minimum.
Expressways at 90
Expressways are capped at 90 km/h, far below an Italian autostrada, and enforcement is strict. Canada’s advice stresses strict enforcement across the board. Cruise control at the limit is the simplest answer for a driver used to 130, and on a short island there is little reason to push.
Alcohol
The limit is 0.08%, higher than Italy’s 0.05%, but Canada notes that drink-driving can bring up to 10 years in prison. Drink nothing if you are driving.
Emergency numbers differ
In Italy you would dial 112, or 113 for the police, 118 for an ambulance and 115 for the fire brigade. In Singapore the police are 999 and the ambulance and fire service are 995. Save both at the rental desk. The Singapore driving guide has the rest of the local rules.
Should you hire a car at all?
Singapore is a small island with a dense public transport network, and many visitors cover their whole stay without a car. A car makes sense when you carry a lot of luggage, travel with children, or have appointments that public transport reaches badly. If you only need a car for a day, check whether the rental company asks for the permit at the counter, because GOV.UK lists it for car hire as well as for longer stays.
A first-hour checklist
- Read the contract for how the in-vehicle unit for Electronic Road Pricing is billed.
- Photograph the car, then adjust the mirrors for a right-hand seat.
- Find the indicator and wiper stalks before you move.
- Set the route in the map app while parked, not at a junction.
- Keep your permit, licence and passport together in the cabin.
