Canada says visitors must carry an IDP in Singapore, and China issues none, so get a hire firm's written acceptance before you book. Traffic keeps left; expressways stop at 90 km/h.
Singapore’s wide roads, English signs and strict enforcement make it a calm place to drive, and its trains and taxis make it an easy place not to. For a visitor holding a Chinese licence, that second option matters, because the permit Singapore expects is one China does not issue.
The permit problem
Global Affairs Canada says visitors must carry an international driving permit, and the UK government’s permit table lists the 1949 IDP for Singapore, needed for car hire and for stays longer than 30 days. The UN treaty records show that China is not a party to the 1949 Geneva Convention, so no Chinese authority issues that permit. A notarised translation is not an IDP.
If you want a car, ask the rental company, in writing and before you pay, whether it accepts a Chinese licence, what translation it wants and whether its insurance covers you. If you do drive
China keeps right; Singapore keeps left. The reversal catches visitors in the first hour: drifting wide after a turn or looking the wrong way at a junction. Expressways are capped at 90 km/h, and traffic rules are strictly enforced.
Alcohol
Singapore’s limit is 0.08%, looser than China’s 0.02% on paper, but Canada notes sentences of up to 10 years in prison for drink-driving. Do not drink at all if you are driving.
