Driving in Singapore on a Brazilian Licence — Allowed With an IDP, Switch to the Left

For a Brazilian driver, Singapore flips the most basic habit of all — which side of the road you sit on — and then enforces the rules with a thoroughness Brazil rarely matches. Take both seriously and it is one of the most relaxing places anywhere to drive.

Your Brazilian licence is accepted for a tourist stay, and an International Driving Permit is recommended to carry with it. The IDP is a cheap, internationally standard translation of your licence; rental companies and traffic police in Singapore expect to see it alongside the licence and your passport, and it removes any argument over a non-Latin-script document.

The headline adjustment is the side switch. Brazil drives on the right; Singapore drives on the left. Roundabouts circulate the opposite way, your overtaking instinct points the wrong direction, and the danger window is your first hour — pulling out of a car park, joining a flow of traffic, or glancing the wrong way at a junction. Start somewhere quiet, keep your speed down, and consciously check the mirror that is now on your other side until the new pattern sticks.

The second thing is enforcement. Singapore’s roads are excellent and well-marked, and the limits are low — 50 km/h in town, up to 70 on rural roads, 90 on expressways — backed by a dense camera network with little tolerance. The legal alcohol limit reads as 0.08 BAC, higher than the effective zero you are used to under Brazil’s Lei Seca, but do not be misled: drink-driving penalties here are among the world’s harshest, jail included, so the only safe standard is nothing before you drive. A typical speeding fine starts around SGD 150 (about EUR 100) plus demerit points.
