Can an Austrian Drive in Singapore? — Yes With an IDP, But You Switch to the Left

Singapore is an easy place to drive in almost every respect — the roads are excellent and well signed — but for an Austrian it asks two unfamiliar things at once. Your Austrian licence is accepted for a tourist stay, and you should carry an International Driving Permit with it. Inside the EU your licence travels without one; Singapore sits outside that system, so the IDP is the inexpensive document that makes the rental desk and any traffic stop straightforward. Bring it with your passport and licence.

The first real adjustment is the side of the road. Singapore drives on the left, the mirror of Austria. Roundabouts circulate the other way, your overtaking instinct points the wrong direction, and the first junction after collecting the car is where mistakes happen. Take it slowly to start, ideally away from the city core, and stay deliberate until the new geometry feels natural — being on the right of a right-hand-drive car adds to the relearning.

The second is speed. After Austrian autobahns with their 130 km/h stretches, Singapore feels tightly capped: 50 km/h in town, up to 70 on rural roads, and 90 on the expressways, full stop. Enforcement is dense and automated, the camera network is comprehensive, and tolerances are slim, so the cruise-control habits from home need recalibrating downward. A modest overspeed typically costs around SGD 150 (about EUR 100) plus demerit points, which can affect a rental.

One thing not to read the wrong way: the legal alcohol limit is 0.08 BAC, higher than the 0.05 you are used to. Do not treat that as licence to drink — Singapore’s drink-driving penalties are among the harshest anywhere, with jail a genuine possibility, so the only sensible standard is zero. Fuel is expensive at about EUR 1.98 a litre, and the emergency number is 999.
