Can a British Driver Use Their Licence in Sierra Leone? — IDP Advised, the Side Switch
United Kingdom
Sierra Leone
A British licence holder can drive in Sierra Leone with an International Driving Permit advised to carry alongside it. The key point is the side switch — traffic runs on the right, the opposite of the UK — and road conditions, rather than the rules, are the real challenge; many visitors hire a car with a driver.
Sierra Leone is a West African country of green hills and Atlantic beaches, and for a British visitor self-driving is possible but rarely the easy option — the rules are simple, while the roads, the traffic and the navigation are where trips actually get hard. Start any plan with current Foreign Office travel advice.
The verdict for British licence holders
A British licence holder can drive in Sierra Leone with an International Driving Permit advised to carry alongside the UK licence and passport. The licence is rarely the sticking point. In practice many visitors hire a vehicle with a local driver, both for the road conditions and because navigation outside Freetown can be difficult. If you do drive yourself, arrange the IDP in the UK before travelling.
Left to right — and dense Freetown traffic
Sierra Leone drives on the right, the opposite of the UK, so British drivers make the familiar left-to-right switch. The hardest place to do it is Freetown itself: traffic is heavy, lane discipline is loose, and motorbike taxis (okadas) weave through gaps constantly. Take the switch carefully at junctions and roundabouts, and give yourself room.
Conditions matter more than the limits
Posted limits are an urban 50 km/h, rural 80 km/h and 100 km/h on the few faster roads, but condition is the real story: outside the capital, sealed roads give way to laterite tracks that wash out in the rainy season (roughly May to October), bridges can be single-lane, and unlit vehicles and pedestrians are common after dark. Drive to the road in front of you, not the sign, and avoid night driving where you can. The drink-drive limit is 0.08, the same headline figure as home, but treat it as zero on roads like these.
Sierra Leone publishes no on-the-spot speeding fine schedule — pay any roadside penalty against an official receipt. The emergency number is 112.
