UK Photocard in Serbia 2026: Six Months, Keep Right, 0.02%

Serbia rewards a self-drive trip, from the Danube fortresses to the mountain monasteries, and the licence side is simpler for British visitors than many expect. The adjustments that matter happen on the road itself: the side you drive on and how little alcohol it takes to cross the line.

The side switch comes first

The UK drives on the left and Serbia on the right, and this is the change most likely to catch you out. Roundabouts now flow anticlockwise, overtaking happens on the left, and the reflex glance at a junction goes the wrong way. The risk window is the first day; take the opening hour on quiet roads rather than central Belgrade.

Your photocard is enough for a holiday

GOV.UK says you can drive in Serbia on a UK photocard licence for a series of short visits up to a year, or a single stay of up to six months; stay longer and you need a Serbian licence. An International Driving Permit is not required, but GOV.UK notes that the 1968 version can be helpful because Serbian police recognise it. Under article 183 of Serbia’s Road Traffic Safety Act a visitor must also carry proof of how long they have been in the country, so keep the passport with its entry stamp in the car. A 0.02% alcohol line

Serbia treats a driver as under the influence above 0.20 mg of alcohol per ml of blood (0.02%, article 187). England and Wales sit at 0.08% and Scotland at 0.05%, so the pint-with-lunch habit does not travel. Probationary and professional drivers are held to zero. Keep driving days dry.

Speeds, fines and kit

The Act sets 50 km/h in built-up areas, 80 km/h outside them, 100 km/h on expressways and 130 km/h on the tolled motorways. Going up to 10 km/h over is a fixed RSD 3,000 fine (article 334), and the higher bands add penalty points; the Speeding Fine Calculator models a ticket. GOV.UK warns that roads vary widely and are worst in rural areas after bad weather, singling out the Ibarska Magistrala between Belgrade and Montenegro. Canada’s travel advice lists the kit a car must carry: first-aid kit, warning triangle, tow rope, working spare tyre and a reflective vest.
