Senegal on an Indian Licence — IDP, the Side Switch & a 0.02 Limit

Senegal is one of West Africa’s more approachable self-drive countries, with Dakar as a busy hub and good coastal routes, but for an Indian visitor two specific adjustments do most of the work — and neither is the licence.

Can you drive on an Indian licence?

Yes. You can drive in Senegal on your Indian licence, with an International Driving Permit recommended. The IDP is the recognised translation rental firms and police prefer to see, so keep it with your Indian licence and passport. Arrange it in India before departure; you cannot get one in Senegal.

The side switch comes first

India drives on the left; Senegal drives on the right. That makes the first day the one to plan carefully — pulling out of a forecourt, joining a roundabout that now flows the other way, or an instinctive glance in the wrong direction. Start on quiet roads rather than central Dakar, and be deliberate at every turn until it stops feeling reversed.

A near-zero alcohol limit

Senegal’s drink-drive limit is 0.02 — stricter even than India’s 0.03 and effectively zero. There is no useful margin, so the safe rule is no alcohol before driving.

Speeds, kit and the basics

Limits run roughly 50 km/h in towns and 80–100 km/h beyond, and a warning triangle is the one item Senegal legally requires you to carry. Fuel is around €1.42/litre and the emergency number is 112.
