Saudi Arabia 2026: UK Photocard Valid 3 Months, No IDP Rule
United Kingdom
Saudi Arabia
GOV.UK says a UK photocard licence is valid for your first 3 months in Saudi Arabia; after that you need a local licence. Hire firms may ask for an IDP. Alcohol is banned; keep right.
For a British driver, the paperwork in Saudi Arabia is simpler than its reputation suggests; it is two local rules that are stricter than anything you deal with at home.
The verdict: GOV.UK says you can use a UK photocard driving licence for the first 3 months after you arrive in Saudi Arabia; after that you must apply for a local licence. No IDP is needed on that basis, but GOV.UK notes that hire car companies may require one, so ask yours before you travel and buy the IDP in the UK if it does.
The rule to internalise before anything else is alcohol. The limit is an absolute 0.0, and alcohol is banned in the Kingdom outright. There is no “under the limit” here, no one-drink margin, nothing comparable to the 0.08 you may be used to. If you have had a drink, you do not drive — and the consequences of getting this wrong are far heavier than a penalty notice.
The second adjustment is mechanical: the UK drives on the left, Saudi Arabia on the right. The motorway network is modern and fast, with limits up to 120 km/h, which makes the side switch more demanding rather than less — your instincts are wrong at speed. The driving culture is assertive, lane discipline is loose, and away from the cities you meet long desert stretches with sudden hazards. Build in your adjustment time on quieter roads first. Where speed cameras catch you, a typical penalty for going over runs around SAR 300–500 (roughly £60–£100), so carry a means of paying.
Practical notes: the general emergency number is 911, fuel is cheap at roughly $0.62 per litre, and document checks are normal — keep your passport, UK licence and rental papers together. GOV.UK says traffic fines are recorded on the Absher system and must be paid before you leave the country. See the full country detail in our Saudi Arabia driving guide, double-check your documents with the Driving Permit Checker, and work out any penalty exposure with the Speeding Fine Calculator.

Zero. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.0 and alcohol itself is prohibited in the country, so there is no tolerance whatsoever. Do not drive after any amount — penalties are severe and go well beyond a fine.
On the right. Coming from the UK you will need to retrain your reflexes, particularly on roundabouts and when pulling out of junctions during your first day behind the wheel.
