Can an Indian Drive in Saudi Arabia? — IDP Required, Zero Alcohol
India
Saudi Arabia
An Indian licence holder needs an International Driving Permit to drive in Saudi Arabia as a visitor — it is required, not optional. Two things define the trip: you switch from left- to right-hand traffic, and the alcohol limit is an absolute 0.0 because alcohol is banned nationwide, so there is no margin whatsoever.
Saudi Arabia’s motorway network is modern and fast, and for an Indian visitor a car opens up everything from Riyadh to the Red Sea coast. The rules differ from home in two big ways — the paperwork is stricter and the road side flips — so it pays to know them before you land.
The licence verdict — IDP required
For Indian visitors the International Driving Permit is required, not just advisable. You carry it alongside your Indian licence; the IDP provides the official translation the authorities expect. Arrange it in India before departure, because you cannot get one in Saudi Arabia. Your foreign licence is valid for visitor stays of up to 3 months — anything longer means converting to a Saudi licence. Keep the IDP, your Indian licence and your passport together at all times; document checks are routine.
You switch from the left to the right
India drives on the left; Saudi Arabia drives on the right. This is a genuine side switch and the most likely thing to catch you out on day one — joining a roundabout that now flows the other way, exiting a petrol station, or the instinctive wrong-way glance at a junction. Take your first hour on quiet roads rather than in Riyadh’s multi-lane traffic, and be deliberate at every turn.
Zero alcohol, modern motorways, real fines
The alcohol limit is 0.0 — and that is not a low threshold, it is a total ban, because alcohol is prohibited throughout the Kingdom. Never drive after drinking anything. Speed limits run 50 km/h in towns, 80 km/h rural and 120 km/h on motorways, enforced heavily by the Saher camera network. A low-level speeding fine is around SAR 300-500 (≈ €70-120). Fuel is cheap at roughly $0.62/litre.
Before collecting the car, confirm the permit requirement with the Driving Permit Checker, read the detail on our Saudi Arabia driving guide, and estimate any penalty with the Speeding Fine Calculator. The general emergency number is 911.

As a visitor you can, but only with an International Driving Permit carried alongside your Indian licence — the IDP is required. Your foreign licence is valid for short visits of up to 3 months; longer stays need a Saudi licence.
India drives on the left; Saudi Arabia drives on the right. This is a full side switch, so your first day needs care at roundabouts, petrol-station exits and junctions.
It is 0.0 — an absolute prohibition, because alcohol itself is banned across the Kingdom. There is no permitted level, and penalties are severe, so never drive after any alcohol.
