Quick Answer

An Indian licence holder can drive in Samoa, with an International Driving Permit recommended to support it. The advantage for Indian drivers: Samoa keeps to the left, just like home, so there's no side switch — and with an 80 km/h top limit, this is gentle, unhurried island driving.

Samoa is one of the more relaxing places an Indian traveller can take the wheel, and the reasons start with the things you don’t have to relearn.

Can an Indian licence holder drive here? Yes

You can drive in Samoa on your Indian licence, with an International Driving Permit recommended to carry alongside it as a recognised translation. The IDP smooths things at rental desks and with police, so arrange it in India before you fly and keep it with your licence and passport.

The big plus: Samoa drives on the left, exactly like India. There’s no side switch to retrain, no wrong-way glance at a roundabout, none of the first-day rewiring that catches Indian drivers heading to Europe or the Americas. Your instincts transfer straight across.

The one rule worth noting: a looser-looking alcohol limit

Samoa’s drink-drive limit is 0.08, higher than India’s 0.03. That extra headroom is misleading rather than useful — village roads are narrow, pedestrians and animals are common, and a small misjudgement costs more here than the number suggests. Drive sober and the higher limit never becomes relevant.

What island driving is like

Speeds are modest — 50 km/h in towns, 70 rural, 80 at the upper end — and in practice the road sets a slower pace than the sign. The two main islands, Upolu and Savai’i, are circled by coastal roads passing through village after village, where you’ll slow constantly for people, children, dogs and the odd loose pig. Sunday is especially quiet, with much of island life paused, so plan fuel and supplies around it. Take the bends and blind crests gently; surface quality varies once you leave the main routes.

The general emergency number is 112. Mobile coverage is decent around Apia but patchier elsewhere, so download offline maps before you set out.
