Saint Lucia on a US Licence — Yes, but You Drive on the Left and Buy a Local Permit
United States
Saint Lucia
Yes, once you buy a temporary driving permit against your US licence (XCD 54 or USD 20), sold by most hire firms, airport immigration and police. Then keep left.
Saint Lucia rewards a hire car: the drive down the west coast to Soufrière and the Pitons is slow going by bus and expensive by taxi. For an American, two things come before the scenery: a local permit and the left side of the road.
The permit you buy on arrival
A US licence on its own is not enough. Visitors without a Saint Lucian licence need a temporary driving permit. Canada’s travel advice says it is sold on presentation of a valid licence through most car rental agencies, the airport immigration desk and any police station. GOV.UK lists what the Department of Transport in Union, Castries asks for in person: your licence, passport, a passport-size photo and XCD 54 or USD 20. Many hire firms arrange it for you, so ask when you book. Saint Lucia is not a party to the 1949 or 1968 road conventions, so an International Driving Permit does not stand in for it. Keep the permit, licence and passport in the car. The Driving Permit Checker covers other islands on the itinerary.
Keeping left
The United States drives on the right; Saint Lucia keeps left. The first hour is the risky one: pulling out of the resort, a roundabout that flows clockwise, the reflex glance the wrong way at a junction. Say “stay left” out loud for the first few turns if it helps.
Roads that set the pace
GOV.UK describes minor and rural roads as narrow, with steep gradients, hairpin bends and blind corners, plus potholes, speed bumps, pedestrians walking in the road and stretches without lighting at night. It singles out the east coast road to and from Hewanorra International Airport for frequent accidents. Drive to the road rather than the clock; a short distance on the map can take a long time. The legal driving age is 17, but hire firms typically rent only from 25.
WHO lists a blood alcohol limit of 0.08 g/dl, the same figure as most US states, without random breath testing; treat it as zero on these gradients. Emergencies: 911, with police also on 999. The Saint Lucia driving guide has more, and the Driving Fines Abroad guide explains who pays when a hire car picks up a penalty.

Only with a Saint Lucia temporary driving permit as well. Canada's travel advice says it can be bought on a valid licence through most car rental agencies, the airport immigration desk or any police station; GOV.UK gives the fee as XCD 54 or USD 20 at the Department of Transport in Union, Castries, with your licence, passport and a passport photo.
On the left, the opposite of the United States. Combined with steep, narrow roads and hairpin bends, the reversed side is the main thing to manage on the first day.
It does not replace the local permit. Saint Lucia is not a party to the 1949 or 1968 road conventions, and both Canadian and British official advice name the temporary permit as the document visitors need.
