Without a Saint Lucian licence you need a temporary driving permit: XCD 54 or US$20, on your Indian licence, passport and a photo. Traffic keeps left, as in India.
Saint Lucia gives Indian visitors something most overseas drives do not: a familiar side of the road. The paperwork is the part to get right, because your Indian licence alone does not cover you.
The temporary permit is the rule
The UK government’s advice is unambiguous: travellers without a St Lucian driving licence must get a temporary driving permit. You need your driving licence, passport, a passport-size photo and XCD 54 or US$20. It names the Department of Transport at the Union Complex in Union, Castries, where you apply in person. Global Affairs Canada lists more convenient counters: most car rental agencies, the airport immigration desk and any local police station, on sight of a valid home licence. Ask your hire company which route it uses before you land.
An International Driving Permit from your RTO does not replace the local permit, and Saint Lucia is not a party to the 1949 convention under which India issues IDPs. Bring a spare passport photo and the fee in cash. The Driving Permit Checker covers other islands.
The advantage: same side of the road
Saint Lucia drives on the left, the same as India. There is no side switch and no relearning roundabouts.
What needs care: the roads
The UK government warns that minor and rural roads are often narrow, with steep gradients, hairpin bends and blind corners, and that minibus drivers often speed. Use low gears on descents and give way generously on blind bends. India’s limit is 30 mg per 100 ml of blood; on roads like these, drink nothing before driving. The emergency number is 911 for ambulance, fire and police.
