US Drivers in St Kitts and Nevis 2026: Local Licence Needed
United States
Saint Kitts and Nevis
A temporary local licence is required: EC$62.50 for 3 months or EC$125 a year, from Inland Revenue or authorised hire firms. Traffic keeps left, unlike the US.
Most American visitors to St Kitts and Nevis are surprised that the licence in their wallet is only half the paperwork. You need a second, local licence, and it is worth sorting before your first drive.
The verdict: your licence buys a local one
The Inland Revenue Department issues a temporary St Kitts and Nevis driver’s licence to people holding a valid licence from another country. It is sold at the Inland Revenue Department and at authorised car rental agencies, and costs EC$62.50 for three months or EC$125 for one year. Bring your US licence and passport; the hire company usually handles it at pickup. An AAA permit is not part of the process: the federation is not a party to the 1949 Geneva Convention under which US IDPs are issued, and no official source asks for one.
You drive on the left here
This is the adjustment that catches Americans out. The US drives on the right; St Kitts and Nevis drives on the left. The danger window is your first hour: pulling out of the rental lot, joining a roundabout, or glancing the wrong way at a junction. The UK government warns of potholes and unmarked speed bumps on minor roads, narrow roads with blind corners in rural areas and pedestrians in the road, so start slowly and let local traffic pass.
Alcohol and emergencies
The legal limit is 80 mg per 100 ml of blood, the familiar 0.08. A first offence can bring an EC$2,000 fine and 12 months in prison. Do not drink before driving. After an accident, call the police on 911 and leave the vehicle where it is. Basseterre has the busiest traffic; quieter Nevis lanes are a gentler start if your itinerary allows.

Frequently Asked Questions
Only once you also hold a temporary St Kitts and Nevis driving licence. The Inland Revenue Department issues it, as do authorised car rental agencies, to visitors with a valid foreign licence. It costs EC$62.50 for three months or EC$125 for one year.
No. The temporary local licence is the document that makes you legal, and it is issued against your US licence. Saint Kitts and Nevis is not a party to the 1949 convention under which US permits are issued, so an IDP adds nothing.
80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, the same 0.08 figure used across the US. A first offence can bring an EC$2,000 fine and 12 months in prison, according to UK government advice.
