St Kitts on a UK Licence 2026: EC$62.50 Temporary Licence
United Kingdom
Saint Kitts and Nevis
A temporary local licence is compulsory: EC$62.50 for 3 months or EC$125 a year, issued on your UK licence and passport. Traffic keeps left; limit 80 mg.
A car is the natural way to see both islands of this two-island federation, and for a British visitor the road itself feels much like home. The licence does not: there is a local one to buy first.
The verdict for British licence holders
The UK government is direct: you must have a St Kitts and Nevis driving licence. Visitors buy a temporary licence from the Inland Revenue Department, showing their UK driving licence and passport. It costs EC$62.50 for three months or EC$125 for a year. The Inland Revenue Department adds that authorised car rental agencies issue it too, so the hire desk usually sorts it when you collect the car.
You do not need an IDP for this trip. The temporary licence is the document that counts; the IDP does not replace it.
Same side as home
Both islands drive on the left, exactly like the UK, so junctions and roundabouts need no rethinking. The UK government warns of potholes and unmarked speed bumps on minor roads, narrow roads with blind corners in rural areas, and pedestrians walking in the road. Drive slowly, especially after dark.
Alcohol and emergencies
The legal limit is 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, the same as England. A first offence can bring a fine of EC$2,000 and 12 months in prison; a repeat offence EC$4,000 and two years. Keep alcohol and driving apart. After an accident, call the police on 911 and do not move the vehicle. Ambulance is also 911; fire is 333.
