Visitors must hold a temporary St Kitts and Nevis licence: EC$62.50 for 3 months or EC$125 for a year, issued against your Indian licence and passport. Traffic keeps left, as in India.
Saint Kitts and Nevis is a two-island federation small enough to circle in a day, and a car is the natural way to reach the beaches, the rainforest road and the old plantation estates. For an Indian visitor the rules hold one pleasant surprise and one step you cannot skip.
The verdict for Indian licence holders
Your Indian licence is the basis, but it is not enough on its own. The federation requires visitors to hold a temporary St Kitts and Nevis driving licence. It is issued by the Inland Revenue Department and by authorised car rental agencies, on sight of your valid licence and two pieces of identification, one of them your passport. It costs EC$62.50 for three months or EC$125 for a year. In practice the hire company usually does it at the counter, so ask when you book. An International Driving Permit does not replace it.
The pleasant surprise: they drive on the left, like India
The Inland Revenue Department is explicit: vehicles are always driven on the left, with no exceptions. Roundabouts, junctions and overtaking all run the way your instincts already expect, which is valuable on narrow, twisting island roads.
What needs care: the roads, not the rules
UK travel advice warns of potholes and unmarked speed bumps on minor roads, narrow roads with blind corners in rural areas, unlit stretches at night and pedestrians walking in the road. Take corners slowly and leave time. The legal alcohol limit is 80 mg per 100 ml of blood, above India’s 30 mg, but a first offence can bring EC$2,000 and 12 months in prison, so drink nothing before driving. After an accident, call the police on 911.
