The side switch, then the hills

India drives on the left; Rwanda drives on the right. Expect the wrong-way reflex at Kigali’s many roundabouts and at junctions during your first hour. Once that settles, the defining challenge is terrain. Roads are generally well surfaced — better than much of East Africa — but they wind up and down steep slopes with blind bends and frequent low cloud. Use a low gear on long descents, take corners slowly, and watch for pedestrians and cyclists on the verges, who are everywhere.

Posted limits run to about 50 km/h in town, 80 rural and 100 as a top figure, but the gradient and bends usually keep you well below that. Reliable on-the-spot fine amounts are not published, so don’t assume a number — drive to the road. The alcohol limit is recorded at 0.08, though steep, misty roads make alcohol-free driving the only sensible choice. Fuel is around $1.22/litre, and the emergency number is 112.
