Qatar on a US Licence 2026: Two Weeks, Zero Alcohol
United States
Qatar
A US licence is valid in Qatar for two weeks; an IDP covers six months, and most rental firms ask for one, the State Department says. The alcohol limit is zero; motorways run at 120 km/h.
Qatar is one of the easier Gulf states for an American to drive in — wide, modern roads and the same right-hand traffic you know from home. The catches are cultural and legal rather than mechanical, and they’re worth knowing before you collect the keys in Doha.
The verdict for American licence holders
You can drive in Qatar on your US licence for two weeks, the State Department says, but it adds that “most car rental agencies require an international driver’s license.” An International Driving Permit is valid in Qatar for six months from arrival, and three-month temporary licences are also available. If you plan to rent, get the IDP from AAA before you fly; driving without a valid licence carries severe penalties and can leave you uninsured after a crash.
Zero means zero on alcohol
This is the single rule that catches American drivers most. Qatar’s blood-alcohol limit is 0.0 — complete zero tolerance. There is no “one drink with dinner” allowance, and the consequences of being caught over the line are far more serious than a US DUI. If you’re driving, don’t drink at all. It’s that simple.
Fast roads, faster cameras
Qatar’s motorways are excellent and run at 120 km/h, with rural roads around 80 and towns at 60. The roads tempt you to push, but enforcement is automated and unforgiving: fixed speed cameras are everywhere, especially around Doha, and fines arrive without a friendly warning. Set your cruise to the posted limit and leave it there. Driving is on the right, so there’s no side switch for an American to relearn — the discipline is purely about speed and patience in heavy city traffic.

Qatar enforces a 0.0 blood-alcohol limit — total zero tolerance, far stricter than the US 0.08. Do not drink anything before driving; penalties are severe and treated as a serious offence.
Motorways run at 120 km/h, rural roads around 80 km/h and towns at 60 km/h. Speed cameras are dense and enforcement is automated, so a heavy right foot gets expensive quickly.
